Copenhagen has been Denmark’s capital for over 600 years. It’s an appealing and largely low-rise city comprised of block after block of period six-storey buildings. With an excellent quality of life and one of the highest rates of GDP per head, Copenhagen affords an excellent lifestyle.

Law Firms

Copenhagen is the hub for the ‘Big Four’ law firms in Denmark. There is additionally, a strong presence from UK and German international firms. The legal market has been booming in Copenhagen in recent years and this looks set to continue. At the top firms the majority of the work is conducted in English and predominantly involves cross-border transactions.

Remuneration & Benefits

Salaries at the “Big Four” are commensurate to those in London with a comparable cost of living. For foreign lawyers, income tax is charged at 25% for the first three years, whereupon it reverts to the normal rate of tax. For Danish residents, the 25% discounted rate of tax is also available if you have lived abroad for the previous five years and earn in excess of the equivalent of GB£75,000.

Outside the Office

Copenhagen is a very clean, safe city, set on the coast and steeped in history. There is an excellent shopping scene and café culture both in the city area and the ‘trendy’ district of Vesterbro, and regular markets and festivals held throughout the year. Commuting will often involve no more than a short walk, but if however you decide to live outside the city, transport allowances are available.
