Here is an extract of the Australia Market update contained in the report:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented effect on the Australian economy. The lockdown measures put into place in Australia in late March 2020 brought fear and uncertainty and most firms initially responded with hiring freezes and a focus on transitioning staff to working from home. We saw law firms swiftly repurpose their underutilised lawyers to busy practice areas with internal secondments. We also saw some well-positioned firms take advantage of the lessened competition in the hiring market as they continued to actively recruit in strategic and in-demand areas.
Across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth we saw Corporate M&A and Real Estate transactions decline, although Construction, Restructuring & Insolvency, Litigation, Employment Law and Insurance were relatively busy practice areas. Melbourne and Brisbane were relatively active markets.
